    An Investigation of the Effect of Selected Policy Elements on the Function of Faculty in an Online Learning Environment

    This study examined the perceptions of online teaching faculty and the workload policies which do not often account for the differences in requirements for online teaching including time commitments, professional development and training, technology access and support, and quality standards for course development and teaching. Full-time and adjunct faculty assigned to teach at least one fully online course within the Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS) were included in the study and surveyed electronically. The survey addressed common differences for online teaching and allowed respondents (N = 509) to provide additional comments for each section. While improvements to online course quality and quality assurance efforts have occurred and were noted from respondents, findings suggest challenges for online teaching faculty included the time to design and deliver, interact with students, and manage large enrollment capacities in online courses. Administrative policy and procedure recommendations have been created as a result of the study findings

    Outlier detection of vital sign trajectories from COVID-19 patients

    There is growing interest in continuous wearable vital sign sensors for monitoring patients remotely at home. These monitors are usually coupled to an alerting system, which is triggered when vital sign measurements fall outside a predefined normal range. Trends in vital signs, such as an increasing heart rate, are often indicative of deteriorating health, but are rarely incorporated into alerting systems. In this work, we present a novel outlier detection algorithm to identify such abnormal vital sign trends. We introduce a distance-based measure to compare vital sign trajectories. For each patient in our dataset, we split vital sign time series into 180 minute, non-overlapping epochs. We then calculated a distance between all pairs of epochs using the dynamic time warp distance. Each epoch was characterized by its mean pairwise distance (average link distance) to all other epochs, with large distances considered as outliers. We applied this method to a pilot dataset collected over 1561 patient-hours from 8 patients who had recently been discharged from hospital after contracting COVID-19. We show that outlier epochs correspond well with patients who were subsequently readmitted to hospital.     LAMA: automated image analysis for the developmental phenotyping of mouse embryos

    Advanced 3D imaging modalities, such as micro-computed tomography (micro-CT), have been incorporated into the high-throughput embryo pipeline of the International Mouse Phenotyping Consortium (IMPC). This project generates large volumes of raw data that cannot be immediately exploited without significant resources of personnel and expertise. Thus, rapid automated annotation is crucial to ensure that 3D imaging data can be integrated with other multi-dimensional phenotyping data. We present an automated computational mouse embryo phenotyping pipeline that harnesses the large amount of wild-type control data available in the IMPC embryo pipeline in order to address issues of low mutant sample number as well as incomplete penetrance and variable expressivity. We also investigate the effect of developmental substage on automated phenotyping results. Designed primarily for developmental biologists, our software performs image pre-processing, registration, statistical analysis and segmentation of embryo images. We also present a novel anatomical E14.5 embryo atlas average and, using it with LAMA, show that we can uncover known and novel dysmorphology from two IMPC knockout lines

This paper discusses findings from a qualitative, feminist participatory action research (PAR) study undertaken by an interdisciplinary team of women academics at a modern, corporate university in England. The study illuminates how corporatized HE erodes faculty autonomy, degrades learning environments, damages professional satisfaction and health. Strategies for resistance and liberation developed through the PAR process are discussed

    Next-Generation Probiotics Targeting \u3ci\u3eClostridium difficile\u3c/i\u3e through Precursor- Directed Antimicrobial Biosynthesis

    Integration of antibiotic and probiotic therapy has the potential to lessen the public health burden of antimicrobial-associated diseases. Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) represents an important example where the rational design of next-generation probiotics is being actively pursued to prevent disease recurrence. Because intrinsic resistance to clinically relevant antibiotics used to treat CDI (vancomycin, metronidazole, and fidaxomicin) is a desired trait in such probiotic species, we screened several bacteria and identified Lactobacillus reuteri to be a promising candidate for adjunct therapy. Human-derived L. reuteri bacteria convert glycerol to the broad-spectrum antimicrobial compound reuterin. When supplemented with glycerol, strains carrying the pocR gene locus were potent reuterin producers, with L. reuteri 17938 inhibiting C. difficile growth at a level on par with the level of growth inhibition by vancomycin. Targeted pocR mutations and complementation studies identified reuterin to be the precursor-induced antimicrobial agent. Pathophysiological relevance was demonstrated when the codelivery of L. reuteri with glycerol was effective against C. difficile colonization in complex human fecal microbial communities, whereas treatment with either glycerol or L. reuteri alone was ineffective. A global unbiased microbiome and metabolomics analysis independently confirmed that glycerol precursor delivery with L. reuteri elicited changes in the composition and function of the human microbial community that preferentially targets C. difficile outgrowth and toxicity, a finding consistent with glycerol fermentation and reuterin production. Antimicrobial resistance has thus been successfully exploited in the natural design of human microbiome evasion of C. difficile, and this method may provide a prototypic precursor-directed probiotic approach. Antibiotic resistance and substrate bioavailability may therefore represent critical new determinants of probiotic efficacy in clinical trials
